NHKBSで録画しておいた「英雄たちの選択」で「信長が震えた日～血戦!長島一向一揆～」を見ていました。
I watched a recorded episode of NHK BS’s Eiyu-tachi no Sentaku titled The Day Nobunaga Trembled -- Bloody Battle! The Nagashima Ikk? Revolt.
一向一揆の実態や、それに直面した戦国武将たちの苦悩に焦点が当てられており、「宗教」と「政治」「武力」が複雑に絡み合う構図が浮かび上がってきました。
It shed light on the reality of the Ikki Revolts and the anguish of the warlords who faced them, revealing a complex entanglement of religion, politics, and military power.
いつの時代も、為政者たちが『宗教カルト集団』に頭を抱えていた、というのが良く分かりました。
It reminded me that, in every era, rulers have struggled to deal with what they see as “religious cult groups.”
織田信長を筆頭に、朝倉義景、斎藤龍興、松永久秀、武田信玄、上杉謙信といった名だたる戦国武将が、直接的あるいは間接的に一向宗門徒と激突しています。
Prominent warlords like Oda Nobunaga, Asakura Yoshikage, Saito Tatsuoki, Matsunaga Hisahide, Takeda Shingen, and Uesugi Kenshin all directly or indirectly clashed with Ikki-shu believers.
そして何より象徴的なのは、徳川家康に至っては、自軍の家臣の多くが一揆側に寝返るという混乱に直面したことです。
Most symbolic is that Tokugawa Ieyasu faced chaos when many of his retainers defected to the rebels’ side.
理由は単純明快、彼らが一向宗の門徒だったからです。
The reason was simple -- they were followers of the Ikki sect.
忠誠より信仰 ―― この構図は、為政者にとってはまさに悪夢だったに違いありません。
"Faith over loyalty" must have been a ruler’s worst nightmare.
まあ、「衣食足りて礼節を知る」ではないですが、メシがない状態では、人間は正常な判断はできません。
As the saying goes, “Etiquette follows food.” When people are starving, sound judgment becomes impossible.
日々の暮らしに困窮する農民にとって、一向宗の教えは、来世の救済だけでなく、現世の生存に直結する拠り所だったのでしょう。
For peasants living in daily hardship, what are the teachings of the Ikki sect likely to offer salvation in the next life and immediate survival in this one?
そういう意味では、一向宗を単純に『宗教カルト集団』と断罪するのは、現代の感覚でもやや短絡的な見方かもしれません。
In that sense, it may be simplistic even by modern standards to dismiss the Ikki sect as merely a “religious cult.”

むしろ、戦国武将たちの恣意的な支配、法治とも言えぬ武断的な統治の中で、彼らは、まがりなりにも自治を実現していました。

Had the Kaga Ikki uprising succeeded fully, Japan might have seen the emergence of a Vatican-like religious state within its borders.
もしそうなっていたら…信長が裸で吹雪の中、三日三晩、顕如に詫びを入れる――“カノッサの屈辱・安土桃山版”が歴史に刻まれていたかもしれません。
If that had happened, we might have seen Nobunaga stripped naked and begging for forgiveness from Kennyo in a snowstorm.a “Canossa humiliation: Azuchi-Momoyama Edition.”
そんな想像をするだけで、ちょっとワクワクしてしまいます。
Just imagining that makes me oddly excited.

長島一向一揆（第3回目）では、織田軍が降伏した一向門徒たちを全員虐殺しました。いわゆる「根切り」です。

その被害者総数、実に2万人。これは、2011年3月11日に発生した東日本大震災による死者数と、ほぼ同じ規模です。
The number of victims was around 20,000, almost the same as the death toll from the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011.
災害ではなく、たった一人の為政者の決断と命令により、2万人が命を落とす。
Not from a natural disaster, but from the decision and order of a single ruler, 20,000 lives were lost.
この事実が意味するのは、「暴力装置」としての軍隊が、為政者と結びついたときに生まれる、計り知れない破壊力です。
This fact illustrates the immense destructive power that emerges when military force as a “violence apparatus” is wielded by those in power.
自然災害に等しい規模の人命が、一晩のうちに奪われる――この現実を目の当たりにすると、「歴史とは戦争の記録である」という言葉が、単なる比喩ではなく、血塗られた真実として胸に迫ってきます。
When lives are taken on a scale equal to a natural disaster in a single night, the phrase “history is a record of war” ceases to be a metaphor; it becomes a blood-soaked truth.
