私は基本的に「子どもは勉強が嫌いである」と考えています。
I think that children generally dislike studying.
これは、私自身の経験でもあるのですが、大人になった今でも「強制的または義務的な一方通行の知識の受け取り」というのは苦痛だからです。
This comes from my own experience, but even now, as an adult, receiving knowledge in a forced or mandatory one-way manner is painful.

先日、長女から、
The other day, my eldest daughter asked me,
「『アフガニスタンの少女たちが、タリバン政権下で教育を受ける権利を奪われている』ということは理解しているんだけど、アフガニスタンの全ての少女たちが、本当に教育を受けたいと思っているのかな？」
“I understand that girls in Afghanistan are being deprived of their right to education under the Taliban regime, but do all Afghan girls want to be educated?”
と問われました。
She asked me this.
確かに、メディア（主に西側メディア）では、『医者や弁護士や教師になりたい』という少女たちのインタビュー映像は流れてきますが、『別に勉強なんかしたくないから、今のままで構わない』という映像は流れてきません。
Indeed, in the media (mainly Western media), we see interviews with girls saying they want to become doctors, lawyers, or teachers. Still, we never see footage of girls saying, “I don't want to study, so I’m fine as I am now.”
まあ、そりゃ当然です。そんな映像を放映したら、大騒ぎになります（大騒ぎの内容についてはここでは言及しませんが、ご理解いただけますよね）。
Well, that’s only natural. If such footage were broadcast, it would cause a huge uproar (I won’t go into the details of that uproar here, but I’m sure you can imagine).
ただ、『教育の機会を与えられない』ということは、『勉強を嫌いになるチャンス』すらも与えられていない、ということになります。
However, not being given the opportunity for education means they aren’t even given the chance to develop a dislike for studying.
これは、大問題です。
This is a big problem.
「勉強が嫌い」「将来のことなんか分からない」と言える子どもがいる状態というのは、「探せば好きなものが見つかるかもしれない」「将来を選べる複数の選択肢がある」ということです。
A situation where children can say, “I hate studying” or “I don’t know about my future” means that they might find something they like if they look for it and that they have multiple options to choose from for their future.
このような状態を少女たちに与えないタリバン政権は、やっぱり「クソッタレ」と言い切って良いと思います。
I think it’s perfectly fair to say that a regime like the Taliban, which doesn’t give girls this kind of environment, is “a bunch of bastards.”

So, to my daughter, I said,
「アフガニスタンの全ての少女たちが、教育を受けたいと思っているのかは分からない。統計的に考えれば『勉強なんか大嫌い』という少女たちもいるだろうと思う。ただ、少女たち全てが教育を受ける環境がなければ、『勉強なんか大嫌い』と意思表示することすらできないけどね」
“I don’t know if all Afghan girls want to be educated. Statistically speaking, I’m sure some girls hate studying. But if they don’t have an environment where they can receive an education, they can’t even express that they hate studying.”
と答えておきました。
That’s what I told her.

「勉強が嫌い」と言える子どもが存在できる国は、かなり幸せな国家です。
A country where children can say, “I hate studying,” is a pretty fortunate one.
