私、3年間の博士課程の中で、国際学会で2つの賞を頂くことができたのですが、これが博士号取得の審査に影響を与えていた、ということを知った時には、びっくりしたことを覚えています(知ったのは、学位記を貰った後です)。
I received two awards at international conferences during my three-year doctoral program, and I recall being surprised when I later learned that this had influenced the evaluation of my doctoral degree (I only discovered this after receiving my diploma).
私が大学で履修していた学部は、都市設計や交通工学に関する分野だったのですが、私が受賞したのは「応用情報学」の学会だったので、『そもそもフィールドが違う』と思っていました。
The department I studied in at university was in the field of urban design and transportation engineering. Still, the awards I received were from conferences in “applied informatics,” so I thought, “This isn’t even the same field.”
もちろん、都市設計や交通工学の為の情報を処理する内容のペーパーではありましたが、都市設計や交通工学は、計算がどえらい大変なのです。
Of course, my papers focused on processing information for urban design and transportation engineering, but the computations in those fields are incredibly challenging.
ですので、私は、高速化やらスケーラビリティやら、各種の工夫(というか『苦し紛れ』)を、ほぼ毎週のレベルで編み出していて、それらの結果を、まとめて国際学会に叩き送っていた、という感じでした。
So, I was devising various techniques—speedups, scalability measures, or, honestly, “desperate improvisations”—on almost a weekly basis, and I kept packaging the results and sending them off to international conferences.

—It was essentially the invention or improvement of new computational tools,
で、賞を頂いたようなものです。
And that is what earned me the awards.

以前より、私は「『車輪の再開発』というフレーズが嫌いだ」と言い続けてきました。
For a long time, I have been saying that I dislike the phrase “reinventing the wheel.”
「車輪の再開発」という表現は、無駄な労力の象徴という意味で使われています。
The expression “reinventing the wheel” is used as a symbol of wasted effort.
■ソフトウェア開発においては、標準ライブラリやオープンソースがすでにあるのに、同じ機能を自作してしまう。
In software development, it refers to building a function from scratch, even though a standard library or open-source implementation already exists.
■研究・開発においては、過去の研究や特許を調べずに、既存の発明を繰り返す。
In research and development, it means repeating existing inventions without checking prior research or patents.
ということを、侮蔑的に語るフレーズだからです。
In short, it is a phrase used pejoratively.
しかし、私は、この『車輪の再開発』で、この3年間で2回、国際学会で表彰されました。
Yet, with this so-called “reinventing the wheel,” I was recognized twice at international conferences over those three years.
正確には『新しい車輪の発明』、または『既存の車輪の改良』となるのでしょうが、それでも対象は『車輪』です。
Strictly speaking, it might have been “inventing a new wheel” or “improving an existing wheel,” but the subject was still “the wheel.”
つまるところ、自分で、スクラッチから作り出して、改良した『車輪』は、ちゃんと評価される、ということです。
The point is: when you build a wheel from scratch and improve it yourself, it can indeed be appropriately valued.

「車輪の再開発」には、ネガティブな意味だけでなく、「仕組みを理解するためにあえて再実装する」という肯定的な使い方もあります。
“Reinventing the wheel” can also have a positive meaning: deliberately re-implementing something in order to understand how it works.
例えば、プログラミング教育で、生徒が自分で簡易的なソートアルゴリズムを実装してみる、などが該当します。
For example, in programming education, students might implement a simple sorting algorithm independently.
ただ、これは、『学習や理解のための再現』という内容に留まっています。
However, this is limited to “reproduction for the sake of learning and understanding.”

自分の手で作って動かせば、まだ色々やれることはあります。
But once you build and run something with your own hands, there is much more you can do with it.
既存のツールやライブラリだけに頼ることだけが、研究開発(エンジニアリングを含む)ではありません。
Research and development (including engineering) is not just about relying solely on existing tools and libraries.
それに、私の場合は、スクラッチから作った方が、開発時間も早いことがあります。
In fact, in my case, building from scratch can sometimes even be faster.
実際にツールやライブラリは、事前に知っておくことが大量で、簡単に動かないことが多いからです。
That’s because tools and libraries often require a lot of prior knowledge and frequently don’t work smoothly.
仕様書やマニュアルは、結構いい加減な記載があって、苦労させられることが多いです。
Specifications and manuals often contain sloppy or inaccurate descriptions, which can cause considerable trouble.

私は、エンジニア(含む研究員)の皆さんの全てに、「車輪の再開発」を推奨するものではありません。
I am not recommending that all engineers (including researchers) should “reinvent the wheel.”
それでも、「車輪の再開発」であっても、ちゃんと評価され、そして、役に立つこともある、ということを、私は申し上げたいのです。
Even so, what I want to say is that even “reinventing the wheel” can be properly recognized—and can be useful.
