技術には思想とかいうのがない ーー と思われている人が多いと思いますが、これ結構な誤解です。
Many people seem to believe that technology has no such thing as “ideology,” but that is quite a misunderstanding.
技術とは思想の総体といっても良く、下手すればカルト宗教くらい根深い"執着"を持っています。
Technology can be described as a collection of ideologies, and in some cases, it carries an obsession as deep as that of a cult religion.
ですので、カルトと同じように、簡単にセクト化もしますし、分派もします。
Therefore, like cults, it easily divides into sects and factions.
しかしながら、宗教のような内部分裂やテロを引き起こしません。
However, unlike religions, it does not cause internal schisms or terrorism.
何故か。
Why?
価値基準が決まっているからです。
Because the value standards are predetermined.
正しい結果を、最短時間で、最小コストで、できるだけ多くの人間が実施できる技術が"正義"だからです。
Technology that yields correct results in the shortest time, at the lowest cost, and can be executed by as many people as possible is “justice.”

ところが、この"技術の執着"というやつは、時としてコントのような誤解を生みます。
However, this “technical obsession” sometimes creates misunderstandings worthy of a comedy sketch.
昨日から今日にかけて、まさにその典型を味わいました。
From yesterday to today, I experienced a perfect example of this.
MATSim の座標系に関するやり取りで、「緯度経度をそのまま使えない」「WGS84 と EPSG の違い」「X=0,Y=0 がどこか」などを巡って、私自身も含めて、ちょっとした"教義の誤認"が発生したのです。
In a discussion about MATSim’s coordinate system, whether lat/long can be used directly, the difference between WGS84 and EPSG, and where X=0, Y=0 actually lies, a slight “doctrinal misunderstanding” occurred, including me.
技術者というものは、基本的に自分が信じている"正しいやり方"に強烈な自負があります。
Engineers, by nature, have a fierce pride in what they believe is the “correct way.”
ある人は「MATSim は投影座標が当たり前だ」と言い、別の人は「いや、緯度経度を扱える例がどこかにあるはずだ」と探し回り、私も「PostGIS で全部やっているのに、なぜMATSimだけ世界が違うんだ？」と首をかしげる。
One person insists, “MATSim obviously uses projected coordinates,” another searches for examples where lat/long can be used, and I wonder, “I’ve done everything in PostGIS, so why does MATSim live in a different world?”
それぞれが、それぞれの流派の"正しさ"を抱えているからこそ、話が少しだけ噛み合わなくなる。
Because each person holds their own school’s “correctness,” the conversation misaligns just a little.
まるで小規模な宗派争いです。
It’s like a small-scale sectarian dispute.
しかし、最終的には衝突にはならない。
But it never escalates into real conflict.
何故か。
Why?
技術の世界には、先に述べた通り、共通の価値基準があるからです。
Because, as mentioned earlier, there is a shared set of values in the world of technology.
■「とにかく正しく動けばいい」
■ “As long as it runs correctly, that’s fine.”
■「誤差がなく、安全で、再現できればいい」
■ “It should be accurate, safe, and reproducible.”
■「それが最速・最安であればなおいい」
■ “Faster and cheaper is even better.”
そして、
And,
■「自分が適用する事例にとって、自分がラクできるものがいい」
■ “For my own case, whatever lets me work more easily is best.”
MATSim の座標系問題も、結局はこの基準に従って収束していきます。
The MATSim coordinate issue also ultimately converges according to these standards.
・WGS84 をそのまま突っ込むと挙動が崩れる
Feeding in WGS84 directly breaks the behavior.
・だから EPSG（ローカル投影）に変換して使う
So we convert it to an EPSG (local projection).
・PostGIS でも MATSim でも、同じ"正しさ"に向かっている
PostGIS and MATSim aim toward the same “correctness.”
・単に「道具ごとの作法」が違うだけ
The only difference is each tool’s “custom.”
こうやって、カルト宗教のように深い"執着"を持ちながらも、最終的には"正義＝正しく動くこと"の一点で落ち着く。
Thus, despite having obsessions as deep as a cult, everything settles on the single point: “justice = working correctly.”
昨日から今日までの座標系論争も、結局はその枠組みの中でピタリと位置が定まっていきました。
Even the coordinate dispute from yesterday to today eventually found its proper place within this framework.
そして、毎度のことながら思うのです。
And once again, I realize:
■技術者が争いに発展しないのは、技術者の人格が優れているからではない(というか、人格には問題のある人間の方が多いと思う(主観))
■ Engineers don’t avoid conflict because their personalities are superior (in fact, many have personality issues, in my opinion).
■執着と執念があるくせに暴走しないのは、「最終的に"正しさ"には逆らえない」という一点で皆が一致しているから
■ Despite obsession and persistence, they don’t go rogue because everyone agrees on one point: ultimately, no one can defy “correctness.”
である、ということです。
That’s what it comes down to.
MATSim の座標系ひとつとっても、価値基準の存在がいかに重要か、改めてよく分かる一件でした。
Even something as simple as MATSim’s coordinate system reminds me of how vital these value standards are.

MATSim の座標系騒動を通じて思い出したのですが、技術の世界にはもっと長い歴史を持つ"宗派争い"があります。
Through this coordinate incident, I remembered an even older “sectarian war” in the tech world.
そう、vi と emacs です。
Yes. They are vi and emacs.
あれはもう、技術界隈における"永世宗教戦争"と言っていい。
That one is practically an “eternal religious war” in tech culture.
MATSim の座標系なんて、あれに比べれば地域の小競り合いレベルです。
Compared to that, the MATSim coordinate dispute is a local street scuffle.
私が新卒のころには、すでに"どちらを使うか"で先輩エンジニアたちが軽く火花を散らしていました。
When I was a new graduate, senior engineers were already sparking over “which one to use.”
「カーソル移動に矢印キーを使う奴は修行が足りん」
“You’re not disciplined enough if you use arrow keys to move the cursor.”
「指がホームポジションから外れるのは悪」
“It’s bad form to move your fingers away from the home position.”
「emacs はキーボードの宇宙」
“Emacs is the universe of keyboards.”
「Ctrl と Meta を押しすぎて腱鞘炎になるのが本当のエンジニアだ」
“Real engineers get tendonitis from pressing Ctrl and Meta too much.”
などなど、今聞けば冗談にしか聞こえないのに、当時は本人たちが本気だったのです。
It all sounds like a joke now, but back then, they were severe.
いや・・・違うな。自分の考えに世界の方が合わせて欲しい、という願望の態様ですね。
No… that’s not it. It was more the desire for the world to conform to their beliefs.
うん、あれはカルトの宗教戦争と同義といってもよいでしょう。
Yes, one could fairly call it a cult-like religious war.
とはいえ、技術者独特の "正しさへの執着" が、MATSim の座標系以上に根深く沈殿していました。
Yet that engineer-specific obsession with “correctness” was even deeper than anything in MATSim’s coordinates.
ところが、これほど"カルト宗教めいた"宗派争いであっても、やはり流血沙汰や内部分裂には至りません。
But even such “cult-like” sectarian battles never lead to bloodshed or schisms.
MATSim における座標系の論争と同じ理由です。
For the same reason as the MATSim dispute.
最終的に"動けばいい"という価値基準があるから。
Because ultimately, the standard is: “as long as it works.”
vi を使おうが emacs を使おうが、シェルスクリプトを書き、設定ファイルを編集し、コンパイルが通り、プロダクトが動けばそれでよい。
Whether you use vi or emacs, as long as you write scripts, edit configs, compile successfully, and the product works, that’s enough.
実際、私の周りでも、最終的にはこんなふうに決着していきました。
In reality, this is how it settled around me:
「会社のサーバには大抵 vi が入っているから vi にした」
“I used vi because it’s installed on most company servers.”
「腱鞘炎がつらくて emacs をやめた」
“I quit emacs because my tendonitis got bad.”
「両方覚えるのが面倒なので nano を使う」
“I use nano because learning both is a hassle.”
「もう VSCode で全部いいや」
“I’ll just use VSCode for everything.”
宗派争いがどれだけ哲学的に盛り上がっても、現実世界では冷静に"最短・最安・確実・簡単"の価値に回収されていく。
No matter how philosophical the sectarian disputes get, reality calmly reduces everything to “fastest, cheapest, surest, easiest.”
この"技術者の執着文化"と"合理主義"の奇妙な共存は、MATSim の座標系問題でも、vi/emacs でも、何十年経っても変わらないのだと、しみじみ思うのです。
And I am reminded that this strange coexistence of “engineer obsession culture” and “rationalism” never changes?whether in MATSim coordinates or vi/emacs?even after decades.
結局のところ、どれだけ宗派争いを繰り返しても、技術の世界では「正しさ」と「ラクさ」に逆らえません。
In the end, no matter how many sectarian battles occur, the tech world cannot resist “correctness” and “ease.”
MATSim でも、vi/emacs でも、最後に勝つのは"思想"でも"執念"でもなく、
In MATSim or vi/emacs, the final winner is neither “ideology” nor “obsession,”
―― 「今この瞬間、自分が一番ラクに作業できる道具」
but “the tool that lets me work most easily right now.”
だったりします。
That’s all it is.

ただこれも、まだまだ検討が甘いです。沈思してみれば、もっと卑属な結論が見えてきます。
But even this is still a shallow conclusion. If you sit with it for a while, a far more base and vulgar truth comes into view.
技術者はよく「合理性こそが信仰だ」と言いますが、あれは建前で、本音はもっと単純です。
Engineers often say, “Rationality is our faith,” but that’s just a facade; the truth is much simpler.
"自分が苦労したくない"という、身も蓋もない動機です。
The raw motive is simply: “I don’t want to suffer.”
ただ、その身も蓋もない動機のおかげで、技術の世界は宗教戦争にならずに済んでいるのかもしれません。
Yet thanks to that unvarnished motive, the tech world avoids turning into actual religious warfare.
今日もどこかで、新しいツールが生まれ、新しい宗派争いが始まるでしょう。
Even today, somewhere, a new tool is being born and a new sectarian battle is beginning.
でも、心配はいりません。最終的にはきっと、いつものように収束します。
But don’t worry. It will surely settle the same way as always.
なぜなら、
Because,
「みんなが、それぞれ、自分にとっての"ラク"に流れる」からであり、これは宗教における普遍的原理です
“Everyone ultimately flows toward whatever is easiest for them” is a universal principle even in religion.
宗教には、厳しい戒律や修行が伴うものがある、と反論する人もいるかもしれません。
Some may argue that religion involves strict precepts and training.
しかし、それが「解脱」であったり「天国の転生」であったり(時には、『現世のモラルを維持する』とかいうものもあるかもしれませんが)、要するに未来の(または現在)の"自分のラク"へ先行投資という点において、同じです。
However, whether it is “enlightenment,” “heavenly rebirth,” or even “maintaining morality in this world,” it is ultimately an investment toward future (or present) personal ease.
つまるところ、―― 自分にとってラクであること。
In short whatever is easiest for oneself.
宗教であれ、技術であれ、人間の信じることのオチは、みんな同じなのです。
Be it religion or technology, the punchline of what humans believe in is always the same.
