これまで何度か記載してきた、故ダニエルキースさんの「アルジャーノンに花束を」は典型的なバッドエンドですが、映画化とかドラマ化において、ハッピーエンドバージョンの検討もされたそうです。
As I have mentioned several times, the late Daniel Keyes' “Flowers for Algernon” has a typical lousy ending. Still, a happy ending version was also considered for the film and drama adaptations.
しかし、「アルジャーノンに花束を」がハッピーエンドで終わったら、これほど世界に感動を与える物語になっただろうか ――
However, if “Flowers for Algernon” had ended happily, would it have become such a story that moved the world?
もしかしたら、なっていたかもしれない。
Maybe it could have been.
でも、個人的には、それは「ない」ほうがいい。そんなもの、読みたくもないし、見たくもない。
Personally, though, I think it's better not to have it. I don't want to read or look at it.

「アルジャーノンに花束を」が指し示す現実は、これまで解決できず、これからも解決されないだろう、人間の根源的な本質を抉り出した上の感動の名著です。
The reality that “Flowers for Algernon” points to is a moving masterpiece that exposes the fundamental nature of human beings, which has never been solved in the past and will probably never be solved in the future.
ハッピーエンドは感動を与えますが、バッドエンドは感傷を与えます。それが事実であれば、その痛みはさらに深く心を抉っていくことでしょう。
Happy endings are moving, but bad endings are sentimental. If that is true, the pain will probably cut even deeper into your heart.
私がこれまで寄稿させていただいたコラムは、現実を数字で怜悧に追い込むバッドエンドのロジックで構成されており、子どもたちから「一片の希望もない」と言われています。
The columns I have contributed to so far are composed of a logic of bad endings that ruthlessly pursues reality with numbers, and my children say that there is “not a shred of hope” in them.
そういわれれば、その通りなのです。
