しかし「ハルマゲドンを待ち望む宗教」までをも守るべき絶対的価値、とするのは、正直無茶苦茶に苦しいです。
NHK BSのドキュメンタリー「ハルマゲドンを待ち望んで 米国政治を動かす“福音派”」を見て、思いました。
I watched the NHK BS documentary "Awaiting Armageddon: Evangelicals Steering American Politics," and it made me think.
もしかすると、旧統一教会やオウム真理教といった団体は、このアメリカの“福音派”が持つような、巨大な政治影響力の獲得を目指していたのかもしれません。
Perhaps groups like the former Unification Church or Aum Shinrikyo were trying to gain the same kind of overwhelming political influence that American evangelicals now hold.
信者、あるいは票田として6000万人もの支持を抱える宗教集団に、対抗できる政治家や権力者など存在しようはずがありません。
There is no way any politician or authority could stand against a religious group backed by 60 million believers or voters.
ーー アメリカって、結局「巨大なカルト宗教国家」なんだな
So in the end, America is a “massive cult-religious state.”
と、分かっていたつもりでしたが、改めて突きつけられると、やはり言葉を失います。
I thought I already understood that, but having it thrown in my face again leaves me speechless.
『イエス・キリストが望んでいるのは、"闘い"であり、私たちは最前線で闘う"戦士"であるべきだ』ーー どうやったら、聖書からこんな発想がでてくるんだろう？ コーランじゃあるまいし。聖書に「ジハード」の記載ってあったっけ？
“Jesus wants us to fight, and we should be warriors on the front lines.” ーー How on earth do you get that from the Bible? It’s not the Quran. Does the Bible even mention ‘jihad’?
もう何でもありですよ。
At this point, anything goes.

私自身、大学構内の避難通路で、イスラム教の祈り(サラート)を捧げている学生に出くわすことがあります。
I sometimes encounter students performing Islamic prayers (Salat) in the emergency corridors on campus.
そのときは、できるだけ邪魔にならないよう、足音も立てずに静かに通り過ぎるよう心掛けています。
When that happens, I make a conscious effort to pass by silently, without making a sound, so as not to disturb them.
どんな宗教であっても、等しく尊重されるべきだと思っています ―― 私に害を及ぼさない限りですが。
I believe all religions should be equally respected, as long as they do not cause harm to me.
しかし――
However
「終末（ハルマゲドン）を信じ、それを望む6000万人」
60 million people who believe in and actively wish for the end times (Armageddon)...
という現実を目の当たりにすると、率直に言って、ただただ恐ろしく感じてしまうのです。
When faced with that reality, I can only say, frankly, it’s just terrifying.

『面倒くさい宗教カルトは、早めに潰しておこう』という気持ちにもなります(それでも、我が国では、宗教法人格の取消くらいしかできません)が、一方の私は「宗教の自由」は守るべき絶対的な価値とも思っているのです。
Part of me thinks, “We should stamp out troublesome religious cults before they grow,” yet another part believes that “freedom of religion” is an absolute value that must be protected.
しかし「ハルマゲドンを待ち望む宗教」までをも守るべき絶対的価値、とするのは、正直無茶苦茶に苦しいです。
But to consider even a religion that eagerly awaits Armageddon as something deserving of absolute protection, honestly, that’s a painfully hard pill to swallow.
