江端:「こちらは内政の話になるが、"天皇制"なんかは凄いぞ。私設の軍隊ゼロのまま、時の権力基盤のビッグウェーブに乗り続けて、2700年近くもその皇統を維持し続けてきた、世界最長のシステムだ」
先日、長女と量子力学の話をしていたとき、話題が地政学に逸れました
The other day, when I was talking with my daughter about quantum mechanics, the topic shifted to geopolitics
長女：「あの『北朝鮮』って、一体何なの？」
Daughter: "What exactly is 'North Korea'?"
江端：「『北朝鮮』って、地政学的にはものすごく重要な国なんだよ。中国とロシアと、それから西側としての韓国。この3つの勢力のちょうど真ん中にあってね」
Ebata: "'North Korea' is an extremely important country geopolitically. It sits right in the middle of China, Russia, and South Korea as the Western ally"
長女：「でも、何で"重要"なの？」
Daughter: "But why is it 'important'?"
江端：「それはね、『北朝鮮』が“何をやりだすか分からない”からだよ」
Ebata: "That's because you never know what 'North Korea' might do"
長女：「何をやりだすか分からないから"重要"？」
Daughter: "It's 'important' because no one knows what it might do?"
江端：「量子力学に“シュレーディンガーの猫”ってあるだろ？ 箱の中に猫がいて、蓋を開けるまで生きているか死んでいるか分からないっていう話」
Ebata: "You know 'Schrodinger's cat' in quantum mechanics? It's the idea that a cat in a box is both alive and dead until you open the lid and check"
長女：「うん」
Daughter: "Yeah"
江端：「『北朝鮮』も同じで、誰かが“観測する＝手を出す”ことで状態が確定してしまう可能性があるんだ。確定した瞬間、アジア全体のバランスが大きく変わるかもしれない」
Ebata: "'North Korea' is the same. If someone 'observes' it ? meaning attacks it ? its state becomes determined. At that moment, the entire balance of Asia could change drastically"
長女：「例えばどうなるの？」
Daughter: "For example, what would happen?"
江端：「最悪の場合、“第二次日露戦争”や“第二次日中戦争”が起きる可能性もあるし、“日韓国交断絶”という未来もあり得る」
Ebata: "In the worst case, there could be a 'Second Russo-Japanese War' or a 'Second Sino-Japanese War,' and even the possibility of a 'diplomatic severance between Japan and South Korea'"
長女：「じゃあ、"箱を開けない"ことが、最適解？」
Daughter: "So, is 'not opening the box' the best solution?"
江端：「そう。でも実はもうひとつあって、北朝鮮自身が自分で箱を開けることもあるんだ」
Ebata: "Yes. But actually, there's another possibility. North Korea could open the box by itself."
長女：「自分で開ける？」
Daughter: "Open it by itself?"
江端：「例えば、急に核放棄するとか、逆に核攻撃をするとか、あるいは国の体制を大きく変えるとか。つまり、外から攻撃されなくても、自分の意思で“確定”させることもできる存在なんだよ」
Ebata: "For example, it could suddenly abandon its nuclear weapons, or conversely, launch a nuclear attack, or drastically change its regime. In other words, even without being attacked from outside, it can determine its state by its own will."
長女：「…じゃあ、外からも中からも、いつ状態が確定するか分からないってこと？」
Daughter: "…So, you mean no one knows when it's state will be determined, whether from the outside or inside?"
江端：「そう。だから各国は常に警戒してる。逆に“何をやらかすか分からない状態”のままの方が、アジアの各国(特に大国)には都合がいいとも言える面も確かにあるんだ」
Ebata: "Exactly. That's why all countries are always on alert. Keeping it in a 'no one knows what it might do' state is more convenient for Asian countries, especially the major powers."
長女：「“何をやらかすか分からない状態”が望ましいというのは、なんとも不思議だ」
Daughter: "It's strange that having it in a 'no one knows what it might do' state is desirable."
江端：「量子力学の考え方は、結構、地政学にも適用できると思う」
Ebata: "I think the way of thinking in quantum mechanics can be applied to geopolitics too."

江端：「まあ、そもそも『旗幟を明らかにしない』というのは、我が国(日本)の古来からの外交戦略でもあったし、そういう意味では、『北朝鮮って一体何なの』のレベルで、世界中から『日本って一体何なの』と思われていると思うな」
Ebata: "Well, originally, 'not making one's position clear' has been Japan's traditional diplomatic strategy. In that sense, I think the world sees Japan at the same level as 'What exactly is North Korea?'"
長女：「『自分の立場を明確にしない』というのが良いことなの？」
Daughter: "Is 'not clarifying one's position' a good thing?"
江端:「こちらは内政の話になるが、"天皇制"なんかは凄いぞ。私設の軍隊ゼロのまま、時の権力基盤のビッグウェーブに乗り続けて、2700年近くもその皇統を維持し続けてきた、世界最長のシステムだ」
Ebata: "Well, that's more of a domestic issue, but take the 'Imperial system' for example. Without having any private army, it has ridden the big waves of the ruling powers of the time and has maintained its imperial lineage for nearly 2700 years. It's the longest-lasting system in the world."
長女：「・・・」
Daughter: "…"
江端：「『方針を明確にしない』という方針が、実は最強だったりすることもある。そういう意味で、天皇制は世界に冠たるロバストシステムだ」
Ebata: "Sometimes, 'having the policy of not having a clear policy' is the strongest. In that sense, the Imperial system is a robust system unparalleled in the world."

Ebata: "In other words, the world, countries, cats, people ?"
長女：「ん？」
Daughter: "Hmm?"
江端：「“開けてみるまで分からない”ってことだよ」
Ebata: "You never know until you open the box"
長女：「…で、開けた方がいいの？」
Daughter: "…So, should we open it?"
江端：「開けない方がいいことも、世の中にはあるんだよ」
Ebata: "There are things in this world that are better left unopened"
