私は、“座れる席”と“パソコン”と“コンセント”さえあれば、5時間程度の移動など、どうってことはありません。
北九州（小倉）で開催されていた国際学会から横浜方面に向かって移動中、新幹線が京都駅を出てしばらくしたところで止まりました。
While I was traveling from the international conference held in Kokura (Kitakyushu) toward the Yokohama area, the Shinkansen stopped shortly after leaving Kyoto Station.
原因は集中豪雨です。
The cause was a torrential downpour.
いわゆる「関ヶ原の戦い」で有名な“関ヶ原”のあたりです。この辺りは、東海道新幹線の泣き所です。冬は雪でも、しばしば新幹線が止まるようです。
It was around Sekigahara, known for the historical “Battle of Sekigahara.” This area is a weak point of the Tokaido Shinkansen. In winter, snowfall often causes train suspensions here.
私、父と母が没する前は、実家の名古屋との往復で新幹線を頻繁に使っていましたが、それより西にはほとんど移動することがありませんでした。
Before my parents passed away, I frequently used the Shinkansen to travel to and from my family home in Nagoya, but I rarely traveled farther west.
ところがこの3年間は、岡山、香川、そして今回は小倉と、西方面への出張が続きました。飛行機は使わず、すべて新幹線を使いました。
However, over the past three years, I’ve had several trips to the west?Okayama, Kagawa, and now Kokura. I’ve used only the Shinkansen, not airplanes.

今度、北海道に行けと言われても、新幹線で移動すると思います。8時間くらいかかりそうですが。（そういえば、この3年間で北海道には3回行きました。というか、“行かされました”。）
Even if I’m told to go to Hokkaido next time, I’ll probably go by Shinkansen. It would take about 8 hours. (Come to think of it, I’ve been to Hokkaido three times over the past three years?well, more like I was “made to go.”)

いずれも、観光や娯楽に使った時間の合計は“0秒”です。私には、そんな余裕がないのです。
In each case, the total time spent on sightseeing or leisure was exactly “zero seconds.” I don’t have that kind of spare time.

学会は発表のために行くので、往路の移動中と発表前日までのホテルでの時間は、発表資料の修正と発表練習に使っていますし、発表後もちゃんと他のセッションに出て、質問をしてきます。
I attend conferences to present my work, so during my travel and hotel stays before the presentation, I work on revising my slides and practicing. After the presentation, I attended other sessions and asked questions as well.
まあ、はたから見れば、『こんなに“つまらん大人”もいない』だろう、というくらい、私は“つまらない大人”です。
From the outside, I probably look like the most “boring adult” imaginable?and honestly, I am one.
ただ、思うんですが、学会発表の聴講というのは、私には“楽しい”イベントなのです。
However, to me, listening to conference presentations is genuinely “fun.”
プレゼン資料に英文だけ書いて、それを読み上げているだけの発表に腹を立てるプロセスも含めて、楽しい。
Even getting frustrated with presentations that merely read aloud English slides is part of the fun.
新しい手法や、明らかに大きな問題点（故意、または過失かはどうあれ）を放置したままの発表に対して、それを指摘して質問することも、楽しい。
Pointing out serious methodological flaws?whether intentional or accidental is also fun for me.
私の発表後に、私の周りに、わらわらと人が集まってきて、その質問に答えるのも楽しい。
Having people swarm around me after my presentation and answering their questions is another enjoyable moment.

ただ、レセプション（Welcome party や Farewell party）は、そんなに楽しくない――というか、むしろ苦手です。
However, receptions like welcome or farewell parties aren’t particularly enjoyable for me. I’m not good at them.
私は、学術や技術の話以外のことで他の人と会話をすることに、興味が持てないのです。
I have no genuine interest in discussing topics unrelated to science or technology with others.
そもそも、技術以外のことで他の人間とそれほど深く付き合いたいとも思えないのです（この傾向は、私が年齢を重ねるごとに、どんどん酷くなっているようです）。
Frankly, I don't feel much need to build deep relationships outside of technical fields, and this tendency only seems to worsen as I get older.
以前、嫁さんに、アワードレセプション（表彰式）を欠席して、表彰を受けそこない、叱られたこともあります。
Once, I skipped an award reception and missed receiving a prize, and my wife scolded me for it.
ですので、今回の小倉で開催された国際学会では、がんばってアワードレセプションに最初から最後まで参加してきました。
At this conference in Kokura, I made sure to attend the award reception from start to finish.
幸いなことに、今回発表したカンファレンスペーパーでアワードを頂くことができました。
Fortunately, the conference paper I presented received an award.
委員会会長から直接授与され、握手もして頂きました。今回は、礼を欠くことなく、受賞の場に立ち会うことができたと思います。
It was handed to me directly by the committee chair, along with a handshake. I believe this time I was able to receive it without neglecting proper manners.

で、まあ、今、集中豪雨で停車中の新幹線の中で、私は明日大学で開催される博士論文の最終審査の資料修正と発表練習を続けています。
So now, while the Shinkansen is stopped due to heavy rain, I’m working on revising my slides and practicing for tomorrow’s final dissertation defense at my university.
私は、“座れる席”と“パソコン”と“コンセント”さえあれば、5時間程度の移動など、どうってことはありません。
As long as I have a seat, a laptop, and a power outlet, a 5-hour trip is no big deal.
幸い、今日は、移動以外のすべての時間を、明日の大学の論文最終審査の資料修正と発表練習に当てていました。
Fortunately, I had already planned to dedicate the entire day, aside from the travel time, to preparing for tomorrow's final defense.
それが新幹線の中だろうが、自宅だろうが、どこだろうが、大した問題ではありません。
Whether I’m on the Shinkansen, at home, or elsewhere doesn’t matter.
飛行機のチェックインや出発ゲートでの待機時間などを入れれば、国内の移動においては、新幹線も飛行機も大した時間の違いはありません。
If you count check-in and boarding gate wait times, there isn’t much of a time difference between the Shinkansen and planes for domestic travel.
むしろ、移動中に電源供給が担保される分、新幹線の方がいいです。
The guaranteed power supply during travel makes the Shinkansen more convenient.

This is simply a matter of personal preference.
当面、やむを得ない場合を除き、私は飛行機は使いません。
