嫁さん:「じゃあ、開戦の責任は誰にあるの？」 私:「最後のトリガーを引いたのは"世論" ―― つまり『国民』だと、私は思っている」
先月の学会発表と、先日の論文最終発表に際して、2045年の横浜周辺の街のにぎわいをシミュレーションで計算した結果を示しました。
At last month’s academic conference and in my recent final thesis presentation, I presented the results of a simulation calculating the liveliness of neighborhoods around Yokohama in the year 2045.

I clearly remember the audience's reaction — they looked utterly taken aback.
ざっくり言って、2018年に38箇所あったにぎわいの空間が、2045年にはたった1箇所になる、という、かなりの"ディストピア"な結果になったからです。
To put it simply, the number of lively areas dropped from 38 in 2018 to just 1 in 2045 — a somewhat “dystopian” outcome.
まあ無理もありません。計算の当事者である私自身が、驚愕したくらいですから。
I can hardly blame them, since even I, the one who ran the simulation, was shocked by the results.

10年ほど前に、日本の人口減少シミュレーションをやってコラムで発表した時も、背筋が寒くなるような結果に私自身が震えました。
About ten years ago, I also ran a simulation on Japan’s population decline and published the results in a column; I shuddered at the spine-chilling findings.
で、その直後、SNSでは『江端とかいう奴の計算などアテになるか』というコメントがありました。
Soon after, I saw comments on social media saying, “Who would trust the calculations of some guy named Ebata?”
まあ、結果としては外れました。私の予測よりもさらに下方修正されて、現在の我が国は「人口減少」の驀進中です。
As it turned out, my forecast was overly optimistic. The official projections have since been revised downward, and Japan is now experiencing an even faster decline in population.
「新型コロナの影響」という言い方がされていますが、私の見立てでは、それほど大きな転換点ではなく、せいぜい数年前倒しになった程度です。
People often cite “the impact of COVID-19,” but in my view, it didn’t dramatically change the trend — at most, it just accelerated it by a few years.
それはさておき。

先ほど、このドラマを見終えました。
I just finished watching this drama.
「総力戦研究所」に関するドラマが、16、17日NHK総合午後9時に「シミュレーション～昭和16年夏の敗戦～」という番組で放送されるそうです
やはりシミュレーションを題材にしたドラマは、私には面白い。
As expected, a drama that uses simulations as its theme is particularly fascinating for me.
ただ、このドラマでは「総力戦研究所」に軍部の干渉があったかのように描かれていましたが、多分それはフィクションでしょう（原作にもそういう記載はなかったはずです）。
However, in this drama, the “Total War Research Institute” was depicted as being influenced by the military, but that is probably fiction (I don’t recall such descriptions in the original work).
実際、権力に忖度した研究は大抵の場合「外れる」のですが、「総力戦研究所」の予測は、原爆投下を除き、ほぼ的中しました。これは、我が国のシミュレーション史における金字塔です。
In reality, research distorted by political pressure almost always “misses,” but the predictions of the Total War Research Institute — aside from the atomic bombings — were largely accurate. This stands as a milestone in the history of simulation in Japan.
主人公の「アメリカとの戦争は"するべきか"、"せざるべきか"ではなく"できない"のです」という台詞は印象的でした。
The protagonist’s line, “The question is not whether we should or should not fight America — it is that we cannot,” left a strong impression.

このドラマで、私が「おやっ」と思ったのは、『日本必敗』の結論が研究所だけでなく、軍部や政府の関係者にも共有されていた、という事実がようやく描かれはじめた、ということです。
What struck me while watching the drama was that it finally depicted the fact that the conclusion of “Japan’s inevitable defeat” was shared not only within the Institute but also among the military and government officials.
A級戦犯として東京裁判で死刑判決を受けた東條英機元首相が、日米開戦直前まで和平交渉に奔走していた、という事実はあまり知られていません。
It is not widely known that former Prime Minister Hideki Tojo — later executed as a Class A war criminal after the Tokyo Trials — was actively pursuing peace negotiations right up until the eve of the war with the United States.
開戦後のドラマでは、悪役として大量に描かれることになるのですが。
Of course, after the war began, he has been portrayed overwhelmingly as the villain in countless dramas.

ドラマを見終えた後、嫁さんとの会話です。
After finishing the drama, I had a conversation with my wife.
嫁さん:「じゃあ、開戦の責任は誰にあるの？」
Wife: “So then, who bears the responsibility for starting the war?”
私:「最後のトリガーを引いたのは"世論" ―― つまり『国民』だと、私は思っている」
Me: “I believe the final trigger was pulled by public opinion — in other words, by the people themselves.”
