「国際電話」って分かりますか？
YouTubeを流していたら、中島みゆきさんの「あした」が流れてきました。
When I was playing YouTube, Miyuki Nakajima’s song “Ashita” started playing.
『そういえば・・・』と思って、YouTubeを探していたら、見つけました。
That reminded me of something, so I searched on YouTube, and I found it.
私の大学時代に、世の中の女性の間で絶賛されたCMです。
It was a commercial that was widely praised among women during my university days.
嫁さんに「覚えている？」と聞いたら、「当然！」と言われました。
When I asked my wife, “Do you remember it?”, she replied, “Of course!”.
これは、アーカイブとして残しておくべき作品ですね。
This is truly a work that deserves to be preserved as an archive.

それにしても、今の若い人(というか中年の人も含めて)、「国際電話」って分かりますか？
By the way, do today’s young people (or even middle-aged ones, for that matter) know what “international phone calls” are?
当時、外国に電話をかけるというのは、恐ろしく高価で、物凄く難しいものだったのです。
At that time, making a phone call abroad was terribly expensive and incredibly difficult.
(私は中国奥地から、日本の両親に、安否連絡(生存確認)電話をするのに、その地域の役所にいって、専用電話の予約が必要だったくらいです)。
(When I was deep in China, to call my parents in Japan for a safety check, I had to go to the local government office and make a reservation for a special phone line.)
国内電話から海外に電話がかけられるというのは、(多分、理解して貰えないかもしれませんが)、当時の常識を打ち破る「最大級のイノベーション」で「パラダイムシフト」だったのですよ。
The ability to dial directly overseas from a domestic line was, perhaps, hard to imagine now. Still, it was one of "the greatest innovations" and “the paradigm shift” that shattered conventional wisdom.

こういうパラダイムシフトは、一生に一回程度でいいんですよ。
A paradigm shift like that is enough to experience just once in a lifetime.
人生で、何度も発生すると、結構大変なんですよ。
