現時点で、トランプ大統領が「ノーベル平和賞」を受賞するために、メディアを使って広報活動をしていると聞いた時に、なんというか『清々しいまでの下品さ』を感じました。
昭和時代の中頃、大晦日の日には、テレビで、夜7時から「日本レコード大賞」、夜9時から「NHK紅白歌合戦」を見る、というのが、国民の一般的な過し方でした。
During the mid-Showa era, it was common for people across Japan to spend New Year’s Eve watching “The Japan Record Award” from 7 p.m. and “NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen” from 9 p.m. on television.
この2つの番組は、両方とも生放送でしたので、会場を移動する為に、「一般道路を交通規制して、歌手たちの移動を優先させる」という、民間放送、NHKそして行政(警察)を巻き込んでの『連携したリアルタイム性』は、大晦日の国民の気持ちを大いに盛り上げたものです。
Both programs were broadcast live, so to move between venues, ordinary roads were sometimes traffic-controlled to prioritize the singers’ travel. This was an impressive display of real-time coordination among commercial broadcasters, NHK, and public authorities (the police) that heightened the nation’s excitement on New Year’s Eve.
ピンクレディという、2人の若い歌手のペアの"UFO"という曲は、当時としては扇情的なダンスや挑発的な歌詞の内容も相俟って、その年、ブッチギリのレコード版の売上を出していました。
“UFO,” a song by Pink Lady, a duo of two young female singers, became a runaway best-seller that year, thanks to its sensational dance and provocative lyrics, which were striking for the time.
ただ、私個人としては、あまり好きな曲ではなく、子ども心でも「品がないな」と思っていたくらいでしたので、ピンクレディの"UFO"が「レコード大賞を受賞した」のを目にした時に、かなりのショックを受けたのを覚えています。
Personally, however, I never liked the song; even as a child, I thought it lacked refinement, so I remember being quite shocked when I saw Pink Lady’s “UFO” win the Record Award.
今になって思えば、当然なのですが「レコード大賞」とは、レコードの売上に貢献した楽曲に対して贈られるものなのですが、私は、そこに芸術性とか、なにか分からない『将来への普遍的な価値』というような高尚的なものがあると思っていたからです。
Looking back now, it seems natural that the Record Award was given to songs that had contributed to record sales. At the time, however, I believed it was bestowed for artistic quality or some lofty, enduring value for the future.

When I heard that President Trump was using the media to campaign for a Nobel Peace Prize, I couldn’t help feeling a kind of “refreshingly vulgar” brazenness about it.
私の記憶している限り、「ノーベル平和賞」受賞のアピールをした人間など知らなかったからです。
As far as I can recall, I had never known of anyone openly campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize before.
ところが調べてみたら、対象は"人"でないのですが、かつて、ある活動団体による自薦のアピールはあったようです。
However, when I looked into it, I found that although not an individual, there had once been a self-nominating campaign by an activist group.
うち(日本)です。
It was from Japan, our own country.
日本国内で、「憲法第9条を守る日本国民」または「憲法9条そのもの」をノーベル平和賞に推薦すべきだという運動があり、署名を集めたり呼びかけたりした例があります。
Within Japan, there was a movement proposing that “the Japanese people who uphold Article 9 of the Constitution,” or even “Article 9 itself,” be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and people gathered signatures in support.
まあ、政権与党が自民党(自民党の党是は、設立時から一貫して「改憲」です)である以上、絶対に実現しないような活動ではありますが、それでも、一応、自薦には違いないです。

しかしながら、トランプ大統領の『清々しいまでの下品さ』には遠く及びません。

まあ、ノーベル賞は貢献から付与までの時間が長いので、彼も10年くらい待てば取得できると思います。長生きする必要はありますが。
Well, since the Nobel Prize usually takes a long time to be awarded after one’s contributions, I think he could receive it if he waits about ten years. He just needs to live long enough.

なにしろ、日本には、かつて、佐藤栄作元首相が「ノーベル平和賞」を受賞した、という実績があるくらいです。
After all, Japan once had Prime Minister Eisaku Satō win the Nobel Peace Prize.
日本はもとより、世界中が「平和賞って何？」と懐疑に陥ったと聞いたことがあります。
I remember hearing that not only Japan but much of the world was puzzled, wondering, “What exactly is a Peace Prize?”
一節には、明治維新後、戦争をやり続けてきた、あの好戦国日本が『まがりなりにも29年間も戦争しなかった』ということが評価された、という説もあったほどです。
There was even a theory that the award recognized the once-militant nation of Japan, which had fought repeatedly since the Meiji Restoration, for having managed, however imperfectly, to avoid war for twenty-nine years.
当時の日本が、世界からどのように見られていたかを、そして、今なおどのように見られているか、を示す一例になっていると思います。
I think that episode illustrates how Japan was perceived internationally at the time and perhaps how it is still perceived today.

From the viewpoint of being “countries you can’t just leave alone,” Europe’s Germany and Asia’s Japan may well be on the same level.
