今回、はじめて痛感したのは、 ―― 装いは、単なる外見ではなく、「機能（ファンクション）」を揺がすことがある — という、割とどうでもいいけれど、見過ごしがたい事実でした。
昨日スタッドレスタイヤの交換の相談をしに、嫁さんとイエローハットに言ってきました。
Yesterday, my wife and I went to Yellow Hat to discuss switching to winter tires.
交換の見積りをしてくれたお姉さんの説明は明解でしたが、ちょっと戸惑ったのが「ネイルのデコレーション」でした。
The explanation given by the clerk who prepared the estimate was clear, but what puzzled me was her “nail decoration.”
というか、正確に言うと「ネイルの形状」。ネイルは銀と黒の市松模様(とまでは言いませんが、そんな感じ)。長くて尖っていて、非常に注視力が高いものでした。
More precisely, it was the shape of her nails. They had a silver-and-black checkered pattern (not precisely, but something like it), long and pointed, and extremely visually dominant.
―― お姉さんが資料で差し示している箇所は、指先なのか、ネイルの先端なのか
— I couldn’t tell whether the point she indicated on the document was her fingertip or the tip of her nail —
で戸惑いました。
And that confused me.
私、金髪でもピアスでもネイルでも、個人の装いには興味がありません。そのような装いで人間を判断する基準を持ちません。業務をしてくれるのであれば、誰が何をしようとも構いません。
I have no interest in people’s styling—blonde hair, piercings, nails, whatever. I don’t judge people by such things. If they do their job, I don’t care what they look like.
まあ、レストランやホテル、または営業職などの人は、ある種の暗黙的プロトコルがあると思いますし、それが一種の業務価値をになっていることもあるでしょう。
Well, in restaurants, hotels, or sales positions, I understand there are specific implicit protocols, and those appearances may even function as part of the professional value.
ユニホームによる統一的な機能美や、場の安心感とかは重要な要素だと思いますので、全分野の全業務に装いの自由化がある、とまでは思っていません。
Uniformity, functional aesthetics, and a sense of reassurance are essential, so I don’t claim that complete freedom of appearance should apply across every industry or role.
それはさておき。
But that aside.

今回、はじめて痛感したのは、
What struck me for the first time was this:

という、割とどうでもいいけれど、見過ごしがたい事実でした。
a trivial yet strangely hard-to-ignore fact.
ネイルひとつで「指示の座標系」がズレるのなら、世の中には、もっと多様な"装いファンクション改変"が潜んでいるに違いありません。
If a single set of nails can shift the “coordinate system of pointing,” then surely many more “appearance-induced function modifications” are lurking out there.
たとえば、駅でたまに見かける、深いフードを目深に被った係員さん。こちらが近寄ると、視線が合っているのかどうか判断できず、"会話開始プロトコル"そのものを始めにくい ―― ただ尋ねたいだけなのに、フードの陰に実装された謎のステルス機能がそれを妨害する。
For example, those station staff who wear deep hoods pulled low over their eyes. When you approach, you can’t tell if they are looking at you, making it challenging to initiate the “conversation-start protocol.” You want to ask something, yet a mysterious stealth function implemented under that hood interferes.
一方で、レジに立つ"萌え袖"店員さんは、袖口がバーコードを覆い隠し続けるせいで、商品のスキャン性能が恒常的にデグレードしている(ように思える)。『機能至上主義者』の私には響かないが、たぶんこれは「可愛い」のだろう ―― 『"可愛い"は正義』と、誰かが言っていた。
Meanwhile, the cashier with “moe sleeves”—the cuffs constantly cover the barcodes, causing what appears to be a chronic degradation of scanning performance. It doesn’t resonate with a “function supremacist” like me, but I suppose it counts as “cute”—someone once said “Cute is justice,” after all.
また、薬局で遭遇した"牙柄マスク"のお姉さんも印象深かったです。丁寧に薬の説明をしてくれているのに、こちらの脳が勝手に危険検知モジュールを誤作動する ――「親切」と「威圧」が同時並行に発動する矛盾プロセスの発動。
Another memorable example was the woman at the pharmacy wearing a fang-patterned mask. She explained the medicine carefully, yet my brain's danger-detection module kept misfiring—a contradictory process where “kindness” and “intimidation” activate simultaneously.
装いとは、結局のところ本人の好きにすれば良い領域ですが、第三者に認知に想定外の影響を与えることもあります。
Appearance is ultimately a matter of personal freedom, but it can also exert unexpected cognitive effects on others.

しかし、私は「そういう装いをやめろ」とは、決して言いません。
But I would never say, “Stop dressing like that.”
逆です。
On the contrary.
私たちが「そういう装いに『慣れていく』必要がある」のです。
We need to adapt to such appearances.
この理由は簡単です。
The reason is simple.
「淘汰されずに残った装いは、かならず社会のデフォルトになり、そして、デフォルトになった装いに批判する者（主に、ジジイとババアとおっさん）が逆に批判され、排除される運命にある」のです。―― ほぼ例外なく。
Any appearance that survives selection pressure inevitably becomes society’s default, and those who criticize that default—mainly the older men, older women, and middle-aged guys—are the ones who end up being criticized and pushed out. Almost without exception.
私、そういう事例を、これまでの人生で、本当に腐るほど見てきました。
I’ve seen more than enough of such cases throughout my life.
とは言え、装いの自由とは、"他者の認知設計に思わぬ副作用を撒き散らす自由"でもあるのも、また事実です。
That said, freedom of appearance is also the freedom to scatter unintended side effects across others’ cognitive systems.
私(たち)シニアもがんばりますので、新しい装いのトレンドを作る(主に若い)皆さんも、私たちが追いつける程度のスピードの変化として頂けますよう、何卒よろしくお願い致します。
