最近、OSがインストールされていたストレージの故障により起動不能となったPCや、Windows 11へアップグレードできなくなったPCを分解し、そこから取り出したHDDやSSDをスタンドに装着して、メインPCに接続し再利用しています。
Recently, I have been taking apart PCs that no longer boot due to failed storage or cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. I remove their HDDs and SSDs, put them into a dock, and reuse them by connecting them to my main PC.

I get really angry when I hear “a PC that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.”
いや、ね。『PCのスペックが低くて、Windows 11の負荷に耐えられなくなったPC』というなら、まあ納得はできるんですよ。
If the PC is too weak to handle Windows 11, I can understand that.
実際にWindows 11をインストールして、『あ、これはダメだ』と、"私が諦める"というのであれば、私も諦めます。
If I install Windows 11 myself and decide “this doesn’t work,” then I can accept giving up.
でもね、Windows Updateの方から「このPCはWindows 11にアップグレードできない」と決めつけられるのは ―― PCの死刑宣告みたいなものじゃないですか。
But when Windows Update tells me “this PC cannot be upgraded,” it feels like a death sentence for the PC.
『いやいや、江端。それならWindows10で使い続ければいいだろう』という意見もあるでしょう。
Some people may say, “Then just keep using Windows 10.”
しかし『今後Windows10のセキュリティパッチは、一切配布しないよ』というのは、インターネットの世界において、警察や軍隊が一切機能しない孤島に置き去りにされるようなものです。
However, saying “no more security patches for Windows 10” is like being left alone on an island with no police or military in the internet world.
―― そんな脅しって、ある？ 脅迫罪(刑法 第222条)が成立するレベルじゃない？
Isn’t that basically a threat? Doesn’t it almost sound like intimidation?
って思いませんか。

もちろん、マイクロソフト社には言い分もあるでしょう。
Of course, Microsoft has its own arguments.
「最近の攻撃は高度化しており、OSだけでは防げない。だからTPMやSecure Bootなど、ハードウェア側で安全性を担保する必要がある」「すべての古いPCをサポートし続けるのは現実的ではない」「安全でない環境を使わせること自体がリスクになる」――そうした主張には、それなりの合理性があります。
They say attacks are becoming more advanced, so the OS alone is not enough. Hardware security, such as TPM and Secure Boot, is necessary. Also, it is not realistic to support all old PCs forever, and letting people use unsafe systems is itself a risk. These arguments are reasonable.
ここまで聞けば、「まあ、仕方ないか」と思えなくもありません。
Hearing this, you might think, “Well, it can’t be helped.”
しかし、よく考えてみると、その“安全の基準”も“サポートの範囲”も、すべてマイクロソフト社が決めています。本来なら、ユーザーが「このPCはまだ使える」と判断して使い続ける余地があってもいいはずなのに、その選択肢自体が最初から与えられていないのです。
But if you think carefully, both the “security standards” and the “support range” are decided entirely by Microsoft. Users should have the option to decide that their PC is still usable, but that choice is not given from the beginning.
「動かないから諦める」のではなく、「許可しないから、事実上捨てろ」という構造になっている。
It is not “give up because it doesn’t work,” but “throw it away because it is not allowed.”
それは『私が10年使い続け、考えうる最高のチューニングを施し、各種メモリやHDD/SSDを増設してきたPCを廃棄しろ』と言っているのと同じです。
That is the same as telling me to throw away a PC I have used for 10 years and carefully tuned with upgrades and improvements.
私には、それは結局のところ、マイクロソフト社の「懈怠」に見えます。
To me, this ultimately looks like negligence by Microsoft.

It is not that I dislike buying a new PC. Modern PCs are more powerful and cheaper, so money is not the main issue.
問題は、環境の再構築のコストです ―― PCやOSが変っても環境を移行できるツールやら方法がある、と言っている奴がいますが、それは所詮はMS Officeと、VSCodeを日々使う程度の人間への方法です。
The real problem is the cost of rebuilding the environment. Some people say there are tools to migrate everything, but those are only for people who primarily use MS Office and VS Code.
私のようなIT開発のプロフェッショナル（特殊な環境を使うエンジニア）にとっては、以前と同じ環境を、違うPCの違うOSの上で再構築するというのは、『絶望的なコスト(手間暇)』がかかるのです。
For professionals like me, who use complex development environments, rebuilding the same setup on a different PC and OS requires enormous effort.
つまるところ ―― PCの買い替えコストは問題ではなく、問題は「積み上げた時間の破壊コスト」なのです。
In short, the cost of buying a new PC is not the issue. The real problem is the destruction of the time we have invested.
ハードは消耗品かもしれませんが、環境は資産である ―― にもかかわらず、その資産は保護されない。
Hardware may be disposable, but the environment is an asset. Yet that asset is not protected.
私にとって、WindowsOSというのは、火災や地震のような、人為または自然災害のようなもの、というか「災害そのもの」です。
For me, Windows OS is like a disaster, something like a fire or an earthquake.
地震保険やら災害保険と同様に、『WindowsOS強制交換保険』というのがあれば、入りますし、『WindowsOS強制交換完全対応サービス』というものがあれば、10万円の単位のカネなら出します(絶対に)。
If there were something like “Windows forced upgrade insurance,” I would buy it. If there were a full-service option to handle forced upgrades, I would gladly pay a large sum.

というわけで、私はこれまで大学専用PCとして使用してきたPCを、メインPCに格上げして、環境再構築に血道を上げてきて、ようやく最近安定しはじめました。
So I promoted my university PC to my main PC and worked hard to rebuild the environment. It has finally become stable recently.
で、そのPCの周辺は、2台のHDD/SSDのスタンドに4台のHDD/SSDが差し込まれた状態のまま、剥き出しになっています。
Around that PC, there are two HDD/SSD docks holding four drives, all exposed.
とても"エレガントなPC環境"とは言えない、物々しさです ―― 本当に、災害直後に、動く機械を寄せ集めて運用を始めた町工場のような様子です。
It is far from an “elegant PC environment.” It looks like a small factory right after a disaster, with whatever machines still work running.
正直、私は、今でも"キレ"てはいますが ―― WindowsのOS更新に怯え続けるエンジニアである私は、『市場を独占されたOS王国の支配には、いつまでたっても勝てない』という、弱者の立場を噛み締めています。
Honestly, I am still angry. But as an engineer under pressure from OS updates, I feel we can never win against the rule of a monopolistic OS kingdom.
