本日が投票日の参議院選挙ですが、江端家では、これまでとは少し違う空気が流れています。
Today is the voting day for the House of Councillors election, but in the Ebata household, there's a slightly different atmosphere than usual.
帰省中の長女は「物価が高すぎて、もうどうしたらいいか分からない！」と叫び、
My eldest daughter, who is home for a visit, shouted, “Prices are so high, I don’t know what to do anymore!”
人生で初めて給与明細を見た次女は「どれだけ税金に持っていかれとるんだ！」と怒っていました。
My younger daughter, after seeing her payslip for the first time in her life, was furious: “How much of my pay is being taken for taxes?!”
二人とも、今回の投票では“棄権”しないようです。
It seems neither of them will abstain from voting this time.
ちなみに私は、選挙に対するスタンスについて、嫁さんや娘を含め、誰に対しても「こうしろ」と言ったことは一度もありません。
For the record, I’ve never told anyone, my wife or my daughters included, "how they should approach elections".
そんな資格もありませんしね。

As I’ve written before, what were Japanese people like a hundred years ago?
(1) 未来の私たち日本人のために、中国大陸の中枢部に傀儡国家（満州国）を樹立し、そこから資源（エネルギーや食料）を確保しようとしました。
(1) Tried to secure resources (energy and food) by establishing a puppet state (Manchukuo) in the heart of the Chinese mainland for the sake of future Japanese generations.
(2) 未来の私たち日本人のために、東南アジアに進出（あるいは侵略）して、欧米列強による経済圏（主に植民地支配によるもの）に対抗するためのブロック経済構想――いわゆる「大東亜共栄圏」――の樹立を目指しました。
(2) Advanced (or invaded) into Southeast Asia to build a bloc economy known as the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere” to counter the colonial economic zones of the Western powers, again for the future Japanese.
(3) 未来の私たち日本人のために、上記(1)(2)の利権への干渉を排除するために、第二次世界大戦（太平洋戦争）に突入しました。
(3) Entered World War II (the Pacific War) to eliminate foreign interference in the interests gained through (1) and (2), all for the sake of the future of Japan.
そしてこれらすべてに失敗し、“とてつもない負の遺産”を「未来の私たち日本人」に残しました。
And all of these failed, leaving a tremendous negative legacy to us, the future Japanese.
これら(1)～(3)は、現在の日本では自己批判（あるいは自己否定）の対象とされていますが、
These actions (1) through (3) are now subject to self-criticism or even self-denial in today’s Japan.
当時の国際的な地政学の文脈においては、「やらなければやられる」「奪わなければ奪われる」というのが国家運営の“常識”でした（いわゆる帝国主義の論理です）。
But from the geopolitical perspective of that era, the logic of empire dictated that “if you don’t kill, you’ll be killed,” and “if you don’t take, you’ll be taken.” That was the norm for statecraft.

According to Hobbes’ framework, we voters in this House of Councillors election are nothing more than “impulse and instinct (the body)".
選挙において、理性的に考えるのは政府の仕事。
It’s the government's job to think rationally during elections.
私たちは、自分のこと“だけ”を考え、欲望のままに、野蛮に、非論理的に投票すればいい。
We should vote based solely on our interests, crude, emotional, irrational, and unfiltered.
――深く考えたら負けです。
If you overthink it, you lose.

国家というリヴァイアサンの本能＝身体がうめき声を上げたということなのです。
Are cries from the instinctual body of the Leviathan we call the nation.
あとは、私たちのこのうめき声（＝投票）を受け取って、政府という「理性（＝頭脳）」がまともに機能してくれることを祈るばかりです。
All that’s left is to hope that the rational brain, our government, will listen to these groans (i.e., our votes) and function properly.

However, if the brain is already damaged, no matter how much the body screams, nothing is going to change.
