「江端さんは鬼ですね」

昨年度の年末、激務の同僚(後輩)が、風邪で倒れました。

At the end of the last year, my young colleague caught a cold and broke down under the strain of hard work.

加えて彼は、年度中の特許明細書のノルマが課せられておりました。

Unfortunately, he had a mission to finish the patent work assigned to him.

私は、特許委員を兼務している為、この非常事態に対して万全の布陣をひくことにしました。

I manage patent management to make a perfect line against this emergency.

■特許明細書の提出は、会社のシステムで行えるので、ノルマの提出を営業日の最終日から、大晦日の23時59分59秒まで可能であることを、システム管理者に確認し、

(1)First, I confirmed with the system administrator that the company patent assistant system keeps working through New Year's Eve.

■課長や部長に、大晦日のカンウトダウン前に、自宅で稟議処理をやって貰うことをお願いし、

(2)Secondly, I asked both the chief and the head of the department for a request for managerial decisions during the New Year's Eve countdown.

■最悪の場合は、江端が代筆するという作戦を睨み、

(3)If the worst happens, I was going to write for him,

■同僚には、「心配しなくても良い。31日の紅白歌合戦の大トリまでに、提出すれば良いから、安心して、今はゆっくり休むように」と連絡をしました。

(4)Finally, I mailed him to take a rest with the message "Don't worry. It is O.K. that you could submit the patent statement by the end of the year."

Another young colleague told me that

と、他の同僚(後輩)から言われました。

"Ebata-san. You are a devil."

心外でした。

I felt quite unhappy about the comment.

病床の後輩をこんなにも心配し、万全の態勢を敷き、組織としての完璧なバックアップの布陣を引いた、この私が、

I was worried about my fellows, and I made a perfect line for him as a company organization.

「鬼」？

Am I a devil？

「そういうことではないのです。江端さんが『来月に締切を延ばしていいよ』と、一言言えば済むことではないですか。

"Ebata-san. You misunderstand the direction. The solution is easy. All you have to say is that "you can miss the deadline"

あ。

Oh.

それは盲点だった。

It was a blind spot.

確かに、そういう発想なかったかもしれない。

Certainly, I had no idea of the above.

でも、仕事は仕事だし。

But business is business.

なにより私が、管理不行き届きで、「私が怒られる」は嫌ですから。

Above all, I wanted to avoid getting mad with my boss.

そのノルマを課せられた後輩が、昨年の営業日の前日から出社できるようになりました。

The young colleague recovered from his illness and went to our office.

江端：「どう？ 大丈夫？」

"Are you O.K.?"

と、彼の体調を気遣ったところ、

When I was worried about his physical condition, he answered

後輩：「大丈夫です。営業日中に提出可能です」

"It is O.K. I will submit the patent statement by the deadline.

と、ノルマの内容で返事されました。

He told me about the work.

I thought, "Could be" at that time.

と思った瞬間でした。
